I've finally got back from my three days of flying and speaking terror. The lab I visited was strongly reminiscent of Chernobyl, without the charm of having been abandoned to the forces of nature. It is situated in what I can honestly say is the most soulless and bleak place I have ever had the misfortune to visit. A fatal cancer of freeway, roadside litter and strip mall, on a scale that totally dwarfs the miserable ex coal mining towns in the Welsh valleys (which at least are in beautiful surroundings), or the tedious concrete commuter hubs of the home counties.
